ARTIST STATEMENT
In my body of work, I celebrate the strength, resilience, and unwavering spirit of women, particularly those rooted in African traditions and culture. Each painting portrays a woman adorned with vibrant African print (Ankara) crowned with beautiful flowers, symbolizing the connection between nature and personal identity.
The flowers represent both the nurturing aspects of womanhood and the power of growth and transformation. They bloom as a metaphor for the continual evolution of women, even in the face
of adversity. The vibrant African prints she wears signify the deep cultural ties.
My paintings are more than portraits; they are a tribute to the quiet yet fierce determination that defines a woman’s role in her family, culture, and society. Each of my piece seeks to honor her
journey and the beautiful, multifaceted essence of womanhood.
WHAT INFORMS MY STYLE
My style of painting emerged from the interplay between the subconscious, cultural storytelling, a deep curiosity and an insatiable urge to explore new ideas and forms of expression.
I delve into the world of anthropomorphism, blending it with surrealist techniques through a contemporary lens. Influenced by the dreamlike works of Salvador Dalí, I reinterpret the essence
of womanhood, questioning why women are often likened to beautiful flowers and exploring their identity and heritage through the lens of African culture.
