Akanji Bolaji is a contemporary Nigerian artist whose work explores identity, memory, culture, and the strength of the human spirit. His practice revolves around the theme of the perfect and the imperfect of the Black narrative, his figurative paintings expresses the diversity of human skin, around familiar signature objects like balloons, kites, origami sign, ying and yang, birds, sun motif, zigzag, floral sign, mask, crowns, and animals appear alongside his figures. These elements are not decorative; they carry meaning. The kites and balloons are picked from childhood experiences to represent aspiration and freedom, a mask may question identity, while a book can symbolize knowledge and personal growth. By bringing together everyday objects and surreal imagery, he creates visual stories that leave room for personal interpretation. Drawing inspiration from Nigerian culture, contemporary life, global conversations, and personal experiences, Akanji continually develops new visual languages. He is interested in how symbols, colour, and composition can communicate ideas that words alone cannot express.
